They can only get this off your trailer if they cut off the lock. So, it all comes down to how good your lock is, ’cause once the coupler’s on, it’s nearly impossible to remove.
Very solid. Not cheap Chinese junk.
So, I got this lock after someone swiped my keys and I had this low-cost one that, even though it’s pretty popular, could be busted open with a heavy hammer. I reckon this new one is a lot safer and isn’t just about “keeping honest folks honest.” I added a couple of bits to make it even safer. First, I popped a 3/4″ steel pipe in the middle to toughen it up. Then, I threw a washer on each side. Now there’s no space for someone to get a hacksaw or bolt cutters in. Someone might still try with a portable electric grinder, but they’d be at it for ages. And I’m pretty sure it’d be tough to smash this off. Yeah, it cost twice as much as the cheapo Curt or Masterlock coupler lock, but it’s still way cheaper than those $300 coupler locks.
I reckon the key to security is making stuff look like a real hassle to steal. This lock nails that for sure. It’s big, solid, and super shiny. The rough texture just adds to the whole intense vibe. Pair it up with one of those hefty ABUS 82/63 brass padlocks, and no one will want to tangle with it.
From a safety standpoint, I bet a thief would need a good few minutes and a grinder to get through this thing – fingers crossed someone would spot them! Unless it gets smushed by a speeding train, I reckon this lock is pretty much bulletproof.
Two thumbs up from me.
Big and sturdy.
